A nightmare is a message from the unconscious which wants your full attention. What feels disturbing, even terrifying, in a nightmare should be looked at with equanimity. Consider each object, each character in the dream, closely and from many viewpoints; you are likely to find a concern which is more benign than frightening. It might be some concept, feeling, belief or issue which you have suppressed for a long time- nightmares often recur for this reason. Feelings and concerns that are held in or that remain hidden from view can feel dark and scary. When you bring them out of the basement and into the light, what at first seemed awful and frighening could be something harmless like a doll or a catchers mitt that has been buried with dust, dirt and cobwebs all over it. Looking at and exploring your nightmare is like basking your dream in the sunlight of consciousness. Everything looks less scary in the daylight.
A nightmare can also occur if you are eating or drinking something late at night that does not agree with your system. If this happens to you, try and notice what you ingested and change or eliminate that food or drink from your diet.
